The Impossible TeachingThe Impossible Teaching

The Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 24 - B SC)
October 20th, 2024

by The Rev. Br. Richard Edward Helmer

Jesus’ most essential teachings are almost impossible for us to grasp, let alone live into. Happily, we are not alone in that struggle. Even Jesus’ first followers could not comprehend the new world he was proposing, where the destructive powers of this world are not undone by marshalling counter-powers into warfare, but instead by self-offering, service, and humility. This teaching remains radical, and radically transformative for our time.

The Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost (Year B - Proper 23 SC)
October 13th, 2024

by The Rev. Br. Richard Edward Helmer

Even with everything exactly right as far as the world is concerned, a rich man approaches Jesus with a burning question. Peter jumps fully at Jesus’ reply to attempt to lay claim to a new kind of righteousness. But neither approach will do. Our God does not keep accounts like this.

Saint Francis of Assisi
October 6th, 2024

by The Rev. Br. Richard Edward Helmer

Francis of Assisi, by taking the path of radical poverty, offers us a vision of an interdependent world, where we are drawn together into community by our shared love for one another, the earth, all God’s creatures, and by the reality of our need for this kind of life.

The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 19 - Year B - SC)
September 15th, 2024

by The Rev. Br. Richard Edward Helmer

Peter, like the rest of us, gets it both very right and very wrong at the same time, and finds himself in completely uncharted territory. The reality of Jesus’ way -- what we have called for centuries the way of the cross -- is that it completely upends our worldviews and expectations at exactly the same time that it unseats our terror of death. The journey of faith is to struggle to put one foot in front of the other while carrying our cross, both individually and collectively, as Jesus would have us follow.

September 8th, 2024

by The Rev. Br. Richard Edward Helmer

The unsettling story of Jesus’ encounter with the Syro-phoenician woman speaks to a critically important element of faith and an enduring lesson for all who live at the margins; and for those who support, serve, and stand with marginalized.

The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 6 - Year B)
June 16th, 2024

by The Rev. Br. Richard Edward Helmer

Jesus places before us the gift of beloved community and calls us to be part of its planting and cultivation. What we must learn is that the way of participating in that beautiful miracle is paved with parables... and the remarkable discovery that the way forward will likely surprise us: the way of small things.
