As Zephaniah offers a dark accounting to our natural complacency, Matthew delivers the famous “parable of the talents” accompanied by a profoundly dissatisfying interpretive tradition. Buried deep in its history is another, possibly earlier, telling of this story, which leads us to the importance of listening not only to this teaching with fresh ears, but to our dissatisfaction. Things may not be what they seem; and things are certainly not as they ought to be!
